Party Hosting 101
Party Hosting 101: My Go-To Hosting Tips, Decor Ideas, and Essentials
I genuinely love hosting. I love making people feel celebrated, I love setting the mood, and I love when people walk in and immediately feel like, “Wait… you did all of this?”
But I also don’t think hosting has to be complicated or insanely expensive to feel special. Most of the time, it’s the little intentional details that make the biggest difference: balloons, candles, custom signs, pretty serving pieces, good snacks, and a few personal touches.
So I wanted to put together a full Party Hosting 101 post with all of my go-to hosting ideas, party supplies, Canva templates, and Amazon essentials in one place.
Whether you’re throwing a birthday party, engagement party, girls night, holiday party, NYE party, or just want your home to feel more fun when people come over, these are the things I always come back to.

Start With the Overall Vibe
Before I buy anything, I always think through the vibe of the party first.
Not necessarily a super specific theme, but more like:
Is this romantic and elegant?
Fun and colorful?
Cozy and casual?
Girly and Pinterest-y?
Holiday-specific?
More elevated and neutral?
For my sister’s surprise engagement party, I wanted everything to feel sweet, personal, and celebratory, but still very much her style. So I kept the decor softer and more simple with congratulations signs, fake Polaroid photos, hearts, candles, flowers, and balloons.
For my first NYE party, I went more festive and glam because it was New Year’s Eve, so the balloons, drinks, sparkly touches, and setup made everything feel more like a real event.
And for girls night pumpkin painting, the vibe was cozy, cute, and activity-based, so the decor didn’t need to be over the top. The activity itself became part of the aesthetic.
That’s honestly my biggest hosting tip: pick the feeling first, then build everything around that.

My Hosting Formula
I basically use the same hosting formula every time:
Balloons
Custom signs
Pretty food presentation
Candles or flowers
One personal or memorable detail
A few good hosting essentials that make everything easier
That’s it.
You do not need to completely transform your home every time you host. You just need a few things that make the party feel intentional.
I Always Do Balloons
If you’ve followed me for a while, you already know I almost always do balloons when I host.
They make the biggest visual impact, they’re affordable, and they instantly make your space feel like there’s something to celebrate.
My favorite trick is making fake floating balloons. I use a balloon pump, tie ribbon or streamers to the balloons, add folded Scotch tape to the top, and stick them right to the ceiling. Then I stagger them so they look like they’re floating.
They usually last for days in my home, and the tape has never removed paint from my ceiling. Obviously test it first depending on your ceiling, but this has always worked for me.
For a more elegant look, I like cutting the hanging streamers at different lengths or trimming them into a little bow shape. It makes them feel more styled instead of just random balloons everywhere.
I also love using balloon stands because they add height and make empty corners feel decorated without needing to buy a ton of extra stuff.

Custom Canva Signs Make Everything Look More Expensive
One of my easiest hosting hacks is making custom signs in Canva.
I do this for almost every party because it makes the whole setup feel so much more elevated. You can make signs for food, drinks, menus, welcome messages, dessert tables, or just cute little themed moments.
For my sister’s engagement party, I made simple congratulations signs, framed them in 8x10 frames, and placed them around my home. I also made fake Polaroid photos in Canva with pictures of her and her fiancé, then added little engagement sayings on them.
It was such an easy detail, but it made everything feel so personal.
You can print these on regular printer paper, but if I’m cutting anything out or want it to feel a little nicer, I use heavyweight printer paper.

Food Presentation Matters More Than Fancy Food
You do not have to cook a five-course meal to be a good host.
Honestly, I’m all about mixing easy food with pretty presentation.
For my sister’s engagement party, I made a charcuterie board but ordered sushi catering for dinner. Then I made little custom signs so everyone knew what they were eating and drinking.
That’s the kind of thing that makes takeout or catering feel more like an actual party.
A few of my favorite hosting food ideas:
Charcuterie board, sushi platters, fruit towers, pretty snack trays, dessert boards…
And if you want something that looks impressive but is actually very doable, a strawberry tower is such a fun one. It instantly becomes a centerpiece, especially for girls nights, birthdays, Valentine’s Day, bridal showers, or any cute celebration.
HERE is how to assemble a charcuterie board.

Always Add One Personal Detail
This is what makes a party feel thoughtful instead of generic.
For an engagement party, that could be photos of the couple, their favorite snacks, a custom sign, or little details that match their relationship.
For a birthday, it could be their favorite dessert, a signature drink, or a playlist with songs they love.
For girls night, it could be a simple activity like pumpkin painting, gingerbread house decorating, vision boards, or a themed craft.
People remember the way the party made them feel more than they remember how much you spent.
Don’t Forget the Entryway
One thing I learned from my sister’s surprise engagement party: if it’s actually supposed to be a surprise, think through what the person sees the second they walk in.
I put balloons in my hallway because I wanted it to feel exciting when she walked in, but because my entryway is a long hallway, it basically gave away that something was happening immediately.
I also should’ve hidden all the shoes by my front door because she noticed them right away and knew people were over…
So yes, the surprise still worked emotionally, but if you’re hosting a true surprise party, hide the shoes, hide the bags, and maybe save the big decor moment for after they turn the corner ;)
Final Hosting Tip
My biggest hosting advice is to focus on making people feel thought of.
Yes, the balloons are cute. Yes, the signs make everything look more elevated. Yes, a pretty charcuterie board is always a good idea.
But the real reason people love a good party is because they feel celebrated, comfortable, and like you actually cared enough to create a moment for them.
And that’s why I love hosting so much.
